5 Cultural Differences to be Aware of when Using Asian Dating Sites

Whilst it’s usually a bad idea to make any grand generalizations about the people using Asian dating websites, we feel that there are a few relatively common cultural differences between East and West. So, here are 5 potential cultural differences which western members might want to be aware of when looking for dates on Asian dating websites…

1: Variety of cultures

If you’ve never been to Asia, or don’t know a lot about the continent, its cultures or people, it’s worth knowing this: there are a lot of different cultures spread throughout Asia. Some people may abide by those cultural values, others may not. Some cultural values may be similar to your own, others may seem completely strange to you. Cultures may also have travelled with people who’ve left for a new home, or they may have disappeared during that journey abroad. In short: don’t assume all Asian cultures are similar.

2: Directness and politeness

As with any different culture, it’s wise to be aware of social etiquette such as how direct or indirect people tend to be in public. In some Asian countries, for example, it’s considered impolite to be loud or demanding. In others, being forthright may be fine. Our research tends to recommend that directness is not always a good option, and that being quiet and polite is more appropriate. However, it’s worth finding out more about this when you meet Asian members online.

3: Family matters

Another recurring feature of Asian cultures, so far as online advice goes, is that family can be very important. This isn’t particularly different to many other cultures (after all you’d hardly visit your friends and then insult their families) but the amount of time and respect paid to family members might be a little different. As such, it can be a good idea to talk about family, and how their family might feel about you dating. As with most people, showing respect for their family will serve you well.

4: The best country in the world

Whilst a little national pride isn’t necessarily bad, we’ve sometimes witnessed Asian dating website members being a little arrogant about their country. Sure, you might enjoy the liberty and freedom, even the cuisine or weather, your home country has to offer, but it’s probably best not to assume that another country is worse than yours. Every country has something to offer, and most people enjoy aspects of their life there. Being arrogant about your home country may seem like you’re bad-mouthing other places, and this can be quite insulting.

5: Dating differences

When it comes to dating protocols, you may find that there are some big differences from one culture to the next. Public displays of affection may not be tolerated in some Asian countries, whilst they’re fine in others. One member might want to date casually, whilst another might only date on an exclusive basis. These differences can be personal, but they are sometimes influenced by the local or national culture of that person. It’s a good idea to do a little research to find out about what’s acceptable (or not) in different Asian cultures, before making faux pas on a date.

The lowdown…

When it comes to dating, Asian cultures can differ quite considerably. Westerners might be surprised by some differences, whilst others may seem very familiar. On the whole, it’s a good idea to go in with an open mind, and respect the cultural differences of members you meet. A little research (or even just asking your potential date about their experiences and outlook) is often a good idea ahead of going on a date.
