DateInAsia.com is a highly popular Asian dating site that is 100% free to register.  There are a few other sites which offer free features in one way or another, too, and they’re also worth checking out.  These alternative free sites are simple, with limited features but a high turnover. DateInAsia.com by comparison is a well organized, friendly, highly popular site.  DateInAsia.com's appearance seems to be designed to appeal to females more than males, and the tag line "Love Knows No Borders" suggests romance and marriage, though people come here for all types of relationships.  The demographic here seems to be mostly South East Asia, particularly the Phillipines, and boasts more than a million registered members, so there's a good chance of getting a date.

Sadly there are a few important drawbacks to this site which we feel need to be acknowledged before you go ahead and sign up. The first is the requirement to provide your SMS / mobile number to complete registration. We found this too be rather too intrusive, and whilst it does mean that members are more likely to be genuine we just don’t feel particularly happy about people handing over their phone numbers. 

Secondly, there are a few potential risks with regard to the sort of attention you might get from a free dating site. As well as adverts, you may experiences scams and fake profiles. Whilst these can be prolific on any site such as this, we have read several reports of scamming and bad practice on here. It’s something to be aware of, but not necessarily the overriding factor when deciding which site to go for. Be sensible with your personal information and you ought to be okay.

DateInAsia.com also clearly caters for Western men who want to hook up with Eastern women, so some may say it falls into the category of Mail Order / Foreign Bride website. Navigation is relatively easy and hassle free post-registration.  The adverts are mostly unobtrusive and relevant to the online Asian dating scene.  Registration is short and painless and e-mail verification doesn't take long, although (as we mentioned) there is that SMS issue to get past.  

Once registered and logged in, your profile becomes your pretty pink home page.  This sports your photo, which you can easily manage, and you can edit the profile content at a click.  Your tag line is displayed below the photo, along with your user name and country.  The quality of members' photos is not bad, and most profiles have one.  However, the profile content is superficial and short, not really allowing you to show off the best traits of your personality.

Unlike the No.1 ranking site, and other paying sites in this category, there are no winks, chat, video, games or interactive bells and whistles to while the hours away with your potential sweetheart.  However, there are lists to let you know who's interested in you, add your favorites and contacts to, view who has been recently online, and block members who are annoying you.  

You can choose to hide your profile or make it visible, and opt in or out of e-mail notifications.  If you choose to hide your profile, a big red banner comes up to remind you, in case you wonder why no one has contacted you.  

It is worth noting that for this review we registered a limited profile with no photo to test and browse the site, and weeks later there was no problem with logging on.  However, if you do not complete your registration with SMS within 7 days your account will be deleted. On the plus side this means it is easy to join, but it raises the question of security, and there is no way to guarantee whether members are genuine.  

That said, the FAQ page covers the procedure for reporting members for bad behavior, using a reporting member red "stop button".  Guidelines state that if a member has several complaints made against them, they will be banned.  It goes on to clarify that whilst allegations are taken very seriously,  their system will detect false reports motivated by "revenge and jealousy" and they do not enter into disputes between members. They are not responsible for members being conned by financial scams, and they ban all members who send money to other members, because they believe this encourages scams.  

One would imagine that this arises when a man who is not in Asia hooks up with an Asian girl, and sends her the money to fly over and meet him.  Using an interesting choice of phrase, DateInAsia.com says, "Do not come whining to us if you do anything as stupid as that.  However, if someone asks you for money and you do the right thing and do not send any, we would like very much to hear from you."  Big Asian Brother has spoken.
